Ductless, also referred to as a mini split-system air-conditioners or (mini splits) offer huge potential benefits for residential, institutional and commercial buildings. Ductless systems are commonly used in multifamily housing or as add-ons for homes with non-ducted heating systems, such as hot water heat and space heaters (propane, kerosene, wood). These ductless systems can be a great option for small apartments and room additions, where installing or extending ductwork is not feasible.
Like central air systems, mini splits have two main components: an indoor air-handling unit, and an outdoor compressor/condenser. A conduit that houses the power cables, suction tubing, refrigerant tubing, a condensate drain and links the indoor and outdoor units.
Advantages of a ductless system
Some key advantages of mini splits (ductless systems) are their small size and flexibility for cooling and heating individual rooms. Many types ductless systems can have as much as four indoor handling units connected to one outdoor unit. The number is determined by how much cooling or heating is needed for the building or by the size of the rooms. Each room will have its own thermostat, therefore you only need to have that unit running when that particular room is occupied, thus saving on energy costs.
Ductless Air Conditioners
Ductless air conditioners are also much easier to install than most other types of large area heating and cooling systems. For example, the conduit between the indoor and the outdoor units generally require no more than a three inch hole cut into the wall. Also, most ductless system manufacturers can provide a wide variety of lengths for connecting conduits. So, if your outdoor unit is as far as 50ft away from the indoor evaporator, you will have no problem connecting them. This makes it possible to heat or cool the front side of a home while placing the compressor in an area that is more inconspicuous or hidden.
