When to Replace a Heater

The word ‘heater’ is actually more of a catchall term for any unit that provides warmth or heat to a home. With that said, you may have a boiler, furnace, or heat pump. These are the most common ways to heat a home and each will have a different lifespan. Here is a little about when to replace each one:

  • Boilers function by heating water and pumping it through pipes in the walls to heat the home. These units will typically last about 15 years with proper maintenance. If the boiler is around this age and you are noticing discoloration to the flame on the gas burner or soot on oil burners, this could be an indication that the fuel isn’t burning properly. Rising energy bills and your home being too cold or too hot can also be indicators that the unit needs to be replaced
  • Furnaces last on average 18-20 years. This time frame depends heavily on how well the heater was maintained. Frequent and expensive repairs as well as rising energy bills are the best indicators that this unit needs to be replaced.
  • Heat pumps should be changed or replaced every 10-15 years. If your heat pump is on the low end of this number, start preparing now to replace it. If the unit is nearing or past the 15 year mark, definitely consider finding a new pump soon. Just like furnaces and boilers, if the cost of repairs are getting expensive, electric bills are high, and your home is not comfortable, it may be time to replace it

This list isn’t exhaustive, but if you are experiencing one or more items in the applicable category, a new heating appliance may be in your future. Until then, keeping your appliance well-maintained and inspected can help minimize any serious problems or issues.

Emergency Heating Situations

Aside from the fact that being cold can be miserable, it can also be dangerous. Failing to remedy a broken heater can put your family at risk of frostbite and hypothermia if the temperatures are extremely low. The elderly and young children are especially susceptible to these conditions.
